Hubzilla DevelopmentIn many ways, I think the Hubzilla project is of a similar significance to the development of the Linux kernel.
Unlike so many of the decentralized/federated solutions we often view as "competition," Hubzilla is far more than a "social media" or "publishing" platform. It's a decentralized and extensible productivity platform within which allows you to communicate as easily as you can on social media and publish content to the world in a large number of ways. The list of functioning and robust features and modules is simply amazing. While Mike's work has it's roots stretching back beyond the official beginning of Hubzilla, as far as I can tell the best parts of Hubzilla are unique to the platform that is only 3 years old or so.
For comparison, at 3 years old, Linux had 176,250 lines of code. Today, Hubzilla has 229,807 in the dev tree in Core PHP files (excluding the ./vendor directory, javascript, css, and addons). Contributions to Hubzilla are attributed to 161 unique git identities with 23 of those identities having > 120 commits and about 85 of those identities having < 10 commits leaving 50 or so with between 11 and 79 commits each. (Note: In some cases, multiple identities likely refer to the same person - I, myself, end up developing using between 3 and 5 names because I'm frankly too lazy to synchronize all the different user profiles in my development environments, so these numbers are likely somewhat smaller --- Likewise, because of the way git works and the commit workflow, many commits are likely double or triple counted).
Anyway - that gives some perspective on the project as a whole. A very small group of people have gotten this project where it is in a very small amount of time with no paid team and no corporate sponsorship as far as I know.
