Question about "Expire Other People's Content"

I understand what the setting does, but what happens when a comment "resurrects" a post? Let's say my node has an expiration of 180 days. So, a forum post from 2 years ago that another user posted on another node has been expired and the copy is deleted from my node. Someone else (from a 3rd node) does a google search and finds the post from 2 years ago and comments on it. What happens?

Will I see the comment on my node? Will it be attached to the original forum post? Or will it only show up on the original node (and any nodes which have not yet expired the original post)?

I'm really liking the ability to have "multiple personalities" by setting up different channels. I'm curious, though. Is there a way to include some sort of marker or subtle notification that something new has happened in one of my channels in the "Channel Manager" list? As it is, it seems I'd have to cycle through my channels to see anything new.

Also - I just noticed - there is some mixed terminology between PRIVACY GROUPS and CHANNELS. In the list of PRIVACY GROUPS, the top heading is, "All Channels." Might it be better to rename that "All Connections"?

Yeah, I already have that turned on.... what would be really cool is if that displayed the number of NOTICES or even NEW NETWORK ACTIVITY next to the channel name. Then I could see if they need attention or if I can ignore them. (Be nice if Privacy Groups would do that, too, like Forums)

But those are "wish list" items as I think about what other users might find helpful.

Mario reported a problem with install of the cart/ecommerce plugin.  It warns of error in PHP 5.6 (warnings I missed), but it hard fails in 7.2.  The problem was missing parameters in the $func() call in include/plugin.php.

It set me to thinking that plugin load failures (at the very least install failures) shouldn't crash the system.  I wrapped the $func() calls in try/catch and submitted a PR to dev...

I'm just noting it here in case we want to discuss the idea or in case anyone knows why this would be a bad idea.  (I know, backwards order, but I was having a coding/PR fiesta last night and included it in the list....)  So, here's opening the discussion.

I'm feeling the drumbeat of disgruntled FB users and others getting louder and louder to find a new "home".  I've kind of been prepping for it, but I don't have the resources to do large scale testing and I don't have the knowledge of the Zot protocol to know the answer to this question.

How scalable is Zot?  If on my hub, I happen to get a superstar user who everyone wants to see updates from.... think POTUS... would I need a small server-farm just to keep up with the feed coming out of that one account?  Has anyone done any sort of benchmarking to know how quickly the current network would be overrun, or, say, what sort of requirements are necessary for X users posting Y updates to Z followers per hour?

I know there are a lot of variables, but as I look toward the possibility of onboarding people, I don't really want to deal with "trial by fire."  So any help would be.... er.... helpful.

Okay... not the answer I *wanted* --- but I imagine you're right - I know if I heard of a server admin having the problem I describe, I'd pitch in if I could to solve the issues.

As to your other point.... I had to laugh  --- you're right of course, but I think there are ways around that.

IANAL, but here's what I would suggest --->  Don't run your node "personally."  Create a corporation and keep the i's dotted and t's crossed and run the server under the corporation.  Since corporations are separate "persons" under the law, they can prosecute the corporation - fine it into oblivion... then, just spin up another.  Think of it like you would doing development on a VPS or a docker instance.

In my state, spinning up a corporation is about $200.  Not cheap, but inexpensive.  (LLC's are less expensive - so maybe create an umbrella corporation, and spin up the server under an LLC owned by the corporation - LLC gets sued out of existence... spin up another).

Get xchan_hash for local and remote users?

Is there a single function call to get the xchan_hash for both local and remote users? It appears from a quick look that get_observer will only return the xchan of remote users.

What I'm looking for is a globally unique identifier by which to store the history of interaction within the app I'm creating. Does such a thing already exist? Or do I need to create a custom function to do this?

Ok, nevermind, I found where the observer is set for local users (hint for future: it's in the change_channel function in include/security.php.

That means get_observer_hash should work for both local and remotes to get xchan_hash, correct?
